Book Synopsis
"How can a person recover from the devastation caused by a trusted pastor? The church is a safe haven, isn’t it? Jim was proud of his four daughters, and they had no reason to believe there was evil lurking in their beloved church. His trust in clergy was unconditional. The new pastor came and methodically dissected the family, ripping them apart with such calculated expertise Jim didn’t see it coming. By the time he realized what was happening, his family was almost destroyed, and he knew he had to take action to save his girls. His battle with the church administrators to right the wrongs was brutal, but Jim's faith in God was steadfast."

Readers ask what can be done to make churches safer. It’s important to
take action and get involved by sending a letter to your local legislators with
a quick message such as the following:

Dear Senator/Representative,
Clergy abusing their position of power is among the leading abuses within
society. The devastating effects are not just to the primary victim but to the
victim's family and entire congregation. I am asking you to consider a federal
bill that would mandate criminal background checks and fingerprinting for all
clergy similar to our nation's educators. Patrick Moreland, the vice-president
of marketing for the largest church insurance company, Church Mutual, says, "If
you're a predator where do you go? You go to a congregation that will welcome
you." I would like to know your position on this matter, and I look forward to
your response.
Sincerely,

Newspaper Article published in the Newburyport Current Newspaper (full article in "News and Events")
According to Wisocki-Tierney, the pastor of the Methodist church, who was 20 years the woman’s senior and whose wife was dying of cancer, took a particular liking to Szajnecki’s wife and began “grooming” her for increasing involvement in the church. The events that followed are described by Wisocki-Tierney as a “methodical dissection” of the family at the hands of the pastor.
“The pastor pulled Curt’s wife away for church activities day after day, and the girls began wondering what was happening and what had changed with their mom,” Wisocki-Tierney said. “Before long, she was talking divorce.”

New Innocence Betrayed Workbook now available below through PayPal. It is an interactive companion to our book to encourage critical thinking among parents and teachers about clergy misconduct, making families aware of just how unprotected they are in what should be a safe haven.
Please go to our Workbook link on the site for more information.
REVIEW - "It is written in a way that will help those in trauma due to exploitation, and would be an excellent resource to be shared with anyone struggling with the issue of misconduct whether at the hands of clergy or any other authority figure. It is hoped that the workbook will prevent abuse by teaching the signs to look out for, and make people aware that there is a grooming process the predators seem to know so well--almost like they've read the same book. The hope is to reach vulnerable people before it happens so abuse can be prevented," says Author, Zada Connaway.
