"What happened to this devout, brave family is horrific. There are many important lessons to be learned from both their needless suffering at the hands of a shrewd predator and their further betrayal at the hands of church officials." - SNAP National Director, David Clohessy www.snapnetwork.org

Dear SNAP Members & Supporters:

Twenty years ago I set out to find healing from child sexual abuse by a priest. I was hurting and church officials weren't helping. I believed in the power of self-help and thought that if I could just find other survivors we could support each other and figure out how to heal. Without realizing it then, I was looking for you.

I am so grateful that we have all found each other. After years of believing I was the "only one," it was consoling and liberating to find others. It was painful to learn of so many others' horrific experiences but your resilience, creativity, and insights have been inspiring and gave me a lifeline of hope. If so many of you could make it, so could I.

As we learned from each other, experienced healing and found our voices, many of us realized that part of our own recovery was tied to preventing others from being abused. It didn't take long for the mission of SNAP to become clear: To help the wounded and to protect the vulnerable.
As individuals, we were hurting and alone. Together, we are healing and changing the world. We are empowering survivors, exposing predators and structures that enable them and protecting innocent children and vulnerable adults.

To say that SNAP has come a long way is an understatement. We're making a huge difference for thousands and reaching across the globe.

With our help
·       5,000 child molesters no longer work in religious institutions
·       At least 12,000 victims have courageously come forward
·       The public no longer believes that religious institutions are immune from sexual predators
·       Clergy sexual abuse is understood as a crime and not merely a moral failure
·       At least 31 states eliminated, extended or temporarily lifted statutes of limitations to allow childhood victims of sexual abuse to identify their predators and seek justice
·       The public has a better understanding of the unique trauma suffered by clergy sexual abuse victims

Thank you for your involvement and belief in our work. Thank you for your unwavering support of our mission. While our accomplishments are many, our work remains critical.

The number of victims and family members contacting SNAP continues to grow. At the same time religious institutions' response to victims is often dismal. Religious institutions still confuse forgiveness with accountability leaving wounded victims feeling even more violated. SNAP will continue to be there for them and to break down the structures that support wrongdoing.

Recognizing that you may have already donated, I am asking you to consider doing so again as this year ends. We'll continue on in 2009 with your help and we'll continue to act as good stewards of your generous contributions.

From the SNAP community and on behalf of all the survivors and family members you have helped, Happy New Year!

Book Synopsis

"How can a person recover from the devastation caused by a trusted pastor?  The church is a safe haven, isn’t it?  Jim was proud of his four daughters, and they had no reason to believe there was evil lurking in their beloved church.  His trust in clergy was unconditional.  The new pastor came and methodically dissected the family, ripping them apart with such calculated expertise Jim didn’t see it coming.  By the time he realized what was happening, his family was almost destroyed, and he knew he had to take action to save his girls.  His battle with the church administrators to right the wrongs was brutal, but Jim's faith in God was steadfast."

LATEST NEWS!

Readers ask what can be done to make churches safer. It’s important to take action and get involved by sending a letter to your local legislators with a quick message such as the following:

Dear Senator/Representative,

Clergy abusing their position of power is among the leading abuses within society. The devastating effects are not just to the primary victim but to the victim's family and entire congregation. I am asking you to consider a federal bill that would mandate criminal background checks and fingerprinting for all clergy similar to our nation's educators. Patrick Moreland, the vice-president of marketing for the largest church insurance company, Church Mutual, says, "If you're a predator where do you go? You go to a congregation that will welcome you." I would like to know your position on this matter, and I look forward to your response.

Sincerely,

Newspaper Article published in the Newburyport Current Newspaper (full article in "News and Events")

According to Wisocki-Tierney, the pastor of the Methodist church, who was 20 years the woman’s senior and whose wife was dying of cancer, took a particular liking to Szajnecki’s wife and began “grooming” her for increasing involvement in the church. The events that followed are described by Wisocki-Tierney as a “methodical dissection” of the family at the hands of the pastor.

“The pastor pulled Curt’s wife away for church activities day after day, and the girls began wondering what was happening and what had changed with their mom,” Wisocki-Tierney said. “Before long, she was talking divorce.”

New Innocence Betrayed Workbook now available below through PayPal. It is an interactive companion to our book to encourage critical thinking among parents and teachers about clergy misconduct, making families aware of just how unprotected they are in what should be a safe haven.

Please go to our Workbook link on the site for more information.

REVIEW - "It is written in a way that will help those in trauma due to exploitation, and would be an excellent resource to be shared with anyone struggling with the issue of misconduct whether at the hands of clergy or any other authority figure. It is hoped that the workbook will prevent abuse by teaching the signs to look out for, and make people aware that there is a grooming process the predators seem to know so well--almost like they've read the same book. The hope is to reach vulnerable people before it happens so abuse can be prevented," says Author, Zada Connaway.
